WOMEN EMPOWERMENT PROGRAM

In Nepal, 42.5% of women are literate compare to men about 58%. Women in general have less freedom than men and have to work more than men in a Nepalese society. Educating women and girls of all ages is very important step towards development of a country. Education is important to enable women and girls to have more important role in a society to make decisions at all levels from the household to the nation. Education is necessary for the deprived women to better access markets, sell their goods, be independent, and supplement family income.

The Women Literacy Program running at the CWC are mothers/guardians as well as women from the local community. The participants in this program are mainly aged from 15-45 yrs from indigenous and suppressed society. Some participants are older than 50yrs. from the indigenous class. The majority of the participants are women whose families were displace from the insurgency period, some are construction workers, domestic helpers and some have not been able to fine work.

The main objective of the program is to develop useful skills and self-confidence so that the participants can comprehend and have basic understanding of the Nepali language and income generating skill training. This adult learning will increase community access to functional and useful knowledge such as health talks and women will be able to be more active both at home and in the community. Basic education prevents disease and death as women are less likely to die during childbirth and the life expectancy for women is greatly improved.
